We use a very high quality cotton canvas which is especially designed for the purpose and gives a very high quality and reliable result. The maximum size we can image to canvas is 1 meter (39 inches) wide by up to 4 meters long. In theory we can image up to 12 meters long but I am not sure how we would frame it? When considering the size of your canvas it is important to allow for the wrap around required by the depth of the frame. We need 7.5 cm's (approx 3") on each side for the wrap on the canvas edges. So, in reality, when designing your block framed canvas the maximum size of the shortest dimension on your print is 95 cm's (approx 39"). We can either produce your canvas with simple white edges or add any colour (it is often nice to pick a strong colour from the image itself) or full studio edge. Studio edges are where we run the image around the canvas to look as though the image is continuous. We do not use any of the main image when doing this, we "sample" the main image to the edge wrap to give the effect. When the image is printed to the canvas, we stretch it over the frame (which is specially made for each print) and then apply a "liquid laminate" rather than a varnish. The advantage of this laminate is that is is completely flexible, fully UV safe (which further protects the image from the sun) and water resistant (on the applied surface only) to allow the canvas to be wiped down and cleaned as and when required. All canvases are finished on the back with picture tape and cork bumpers to help protect your walls. The canvases also have wedges that can be used to tighten the canvas should it become a little slack which can happen over time or if the humidity dramatically changes. The image is light safe for 75 years (or so the manufacturers tell me) so if your print fades at the end of the 75 years we will happily replace it free of charge! Hanging - Block framed canvas is probably the easiest to hang. Simply put a pin in the wall and sit the frame directly onto the pin. We have found that the frame sits much tighter to the wall this way rather than using a conventional hook and wire. Care of your Canvas - Should you spill anything onto the surface or it becomes a little grimy over time the laminate we use allows you to simply wipe it with a damp cloth. If the canvas becomes a little slack simply tap each of the wedges to tighten it. In the event that the surface becomes dented (by someone leaning on it for instance) don't panic, simply turn the canvas over and gently wipe the back of the bulge with a damp cloth (being careful not to soak) and then allow to air dry, as the canvas is cotton based it will shrink slightly and so tighten out the dent. Unfortunately, if it is torn you will have to replace. We keep all images we have printed on file so we can easily re-supply your precious image. |
